Impacts
SEAMPHONI delivers a set of tangible, long-lasting impacts that directly advance Europe’s mission to protect and restore its seas.
By combining innovative science, digital transformation, policy support and public engagement, the project strengthens the foundations of offshore marine conservation in multiple dimensions.
SEAMPHONI will:
- Transform biodiversity monitoring in offshore areas, introducing a continuous, scalable and cost-efficient observing system built on eDNA, acoustics and imaging. This integrated approach provides the reliable, reproducible data needed to understand ecosystem status across remote and understudied regions.
- Support science-based management of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas (PSSAs) by offering clear conservation objectives, tailored management plans, actionable models and tools that guide effective protection, restoration and climate-resilience strategies.
- Facilitate cross-sector collaboration, aligning scientists, policymakers, MPA managers, blue economy actors and communities. Through training, co-design processes and the international B2Board, SEAMPHONI strengthens cooperation across European sea basins and promotes shared stewardship of offshore ecosystems.
- Strengthen Europe’s digital ocean infrastructure, delivering an Intelligent Marine Digital Twin fully interoperable with the European Digital Twin Ocean. This enhances access to biological, ecological and socio-economic data, enabling more transparent, informed and adaptive management decisions.
- Inspire a renewed connection with the ocean through creative engagement tools such as the Educ’Ocean exhibition. By bringing offshore ecosystems closer to citizens, the project helps shift public perception from distant and inaccessible to deeply valued and worth protecting.
Together, these impacts reinforce Europe’s leadership in marine conservation, contribute to the 2030 Global Biodiversity Framework goals, and create the conditions for smarter, more inclusive and more resilient management of offshore marine environments.
