Many of these areas remain poorly studied because current approaches to biodiversity monitoring rely heavily on research vessels, which are costly and provide only intermittent data. SEAMPHONI addresses this challenge by pioneering new ways to map and monitor biodiversity in places that are difficult to reach, enabling continuous and cost-effective observation.
The project combines three innovative monitoring technologies:
- environmental DNA, which detects species presence from genetic traces in water;
- acoustic monitoring, which tracks marine life and activity through sound;
- and imaging, which captures high-resolution visual data from the seafloor and water column.
Together, these tools will form the Intelligent Marine Digital Twin, a shared observing system for scientists, policymakers, MPA managers, and citizens. This digital twin will be interoperable with the European Digital Twin Ocean, making offshore biodiversity data accessible, comparable, and actionable across Europe’s seas.
Beyond technology, SEAMPHONI aims to reconnect people emotionally with the ocean, especially in offshore areas where the principle of "out of sight, out of mind" is most pronounced. Through artistic strategies and creative outreach, the project brings hidden ecosystems to life, inspiring awareness and stewardship among citizens.
SEAMPHONI also supports evidence-based marine conservation by providing accurate baselines for understudied areas, enabling continuous biodiversity monitoring, and creating predictive ecosystem models. These insights will help identify and prioritize areas for protection, assess the effectiveness of conservation measures, and improve the management of Particularly Sensitive Sea Areas. The project examines regulatory complexities in offshore zones, highlighting the need for clearer frameworks and better coordination to advance the 2030 Global Biodiversity Framework targets.
By combining cutting-edge science, innovative technology, and creative engagement, SEAMPHONI strengthens the understanding, protection, and visibility of Europe’s offshore marine ecosystems while fostering a deeper connection between society and the ocean.
